God loves you. He wants you to experience
His love in all fullness, but this cannot happen
if there is sin in our lives.
What God’s Word says about sin?
- Doing anything that is not right.
I Jn 5:17a Every kind of wrong doing
is sin.
- Not obeying God’s law.
I Jn 3:4 The person who keeps on sinning
is guilty of not obeying the Law of God.
- Not doing what should be done. James
4:17. If you know what is right to do
but you do not do it, you sin.
In the Old Testament we often come across three
words: Sin, Transgression
and Iniquity.
Ex 34:7 Keeping steadfast
love for thousands, forgiving iniquity
and transgression
and sin, but who
will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the
iniquity of the fathers upon the children and
the children's children, to the third and the
fourth generation.
Job 13:23 How many
are my iniquities and my sins? Make me know my
transgression and my sin.
Let us see what each word means:
1 Sin:
Heb: Khat-taw-aw:
to miss the mark. It also means anything short
of what God expects or wants done or falling short
of what should be full or complete. It is not
only the acts of sin but also the sinful thoughts
and plans of the mind.
Gen 4:7 If you do
well, will you not be accepted? And if you do
not do well, sin is crouching at the door; its
desire is for you, but you must master it.
Ps 51:2 Wash me thoroughly
from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
2 Transgression:
Heb: Peh-shah:
Revolt, Rebellion: To turn against someone and
not obey the one who is the boss. Break away from
just authority.
Prov 28:2 When a land
transgresses it has many rulers; but with men
of understanding and knowledge, its stability
will long continue.
3 Iniquity: Heb:
Aw-vone, crooked, not straight. It is not so much
the act of sin, as it is the way people are sinful
in their hearts.
Gen 15:16 And they
shall come back here in the fourth generation;
for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.
Ex 20:5 "You shall
not bow down to them or serve them; for I the
LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity
of the fathers upon the children to the third
and the fourth generation of those who hate me."
In the New Testament we come across four words:
Sin, Transgression, Fault and Error.
1. Sin: Gk:
Hamartia: To miss
the mark (and so not to share in the prize).
It is used 174 times in the
N.T. It means both the act of sin and the way
people are sinful in their hearts.
Rm 3:23 Since all
have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
2. Transgression:
Gk: Para
basis: Violation, parabaino:
To go contrary to.
Not doing what has been told to be done, or not
obeying God and His Laws
I Tim 2:14 And Adam
was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and
became a transgressor.
3. Fault: Gk:
Paraptoma: Side
slip, error, parapipto:
to fall aside.
This means to fall instead of stand or not being
able to do what is known to be right and should
be done.
James 4:17 Whoever
knows what is right to do and fails to do it,
for him it is sin.
4. Error: Gk.
Agnoaymah: A thing
ignored i.e. shortcoming. Not to know what should
have been learned and known.
Heb 9:7. But into
the second only the high priest goes, and he but
once a year, and not without taking blood which
he offers for himself and for the errors of the
people.
There is a difference between the power of sin
and sin. Sins are like stealing, lying, adultery
and many other things like that. But the power
of sin is what makes the person want to do such
things. Sin is to want to or the desire to do
what is wrong. A person is not a sinner because
he sins. He sins because he is a sinner. It is
easy to sin because man was born with a desire
to sin. It is a power that works in him and he
can do nothing to get out of it by himself. When
a person is saved, it must be from the power of
sin. The power that makes him want to do wrong
must not be allowed to work in him.
Things that show SIN:
God’s Word
- Rm 3:23 All have
sinned.
- Rm 3:22 All men
are guilty of sin.
- Jn 1:29 Tells about
the sin of the world.
God’s word gives a picture of the sin of
the whole man.

Is 1:5 The whole head
is sick.
2. Eyes:
II Pet 2:14 They have eyes full of adultery,
insatiable for sin.

is full of curses and bitterness.

Rm 3:13 They use their
tongue to deceive. James 3:6 And the tongue is
a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among
our members, staining the whole body setting on
fire the cycle of nature and set on fire by hell.
6. Neck: Deut
31:27 KJV For I know thy rebellion and
thy stiff neck.
7. Ears: Mt
13:15 They hear very little with their
ears. KJV dull of hearing.
8. Hands:
Is 1:15 Your
hands are full of blood.
9. Feet: Prov

it.

right and I and my people are in the wrong."
